The Swine Flu - How Big of a Problem is it Really?

The world is coming to an end, or at least this is what the media wants us to think. With the Swine Influenza infesting 15 countries, it appears that we must take this flu seriously. Yes, over 150 people have died worldwide and many more are fighting this virus. But does anyone think we are just making a bigger deal than this really is? Is the media just scaring us into believing we are in more danger than we think?

What makes this flu so different from the rest? 150 people have died WORLDWIDE just from the Swine Flu… but has anyone realized that over 500,000 die worldwide every year just from the regular flu? Yes, the swine flu is in America and one person has died so far… except the child who died wasn’t even a citizen! One person, alone, has had fatal consequences in America but about 36,000 people die from the regular flu every year and over 200,000 are hospitalized for the flu in America as well.

Yes, I have heard it is highly communicable but so is every other virus or flu around. Every time someone in my family is ill, a week later I will find myself lying in bed with a fever. So can we honestly believe that the Swine Flu is so much worse that we need to be closing down schools and locking ourselves in our homes? I feel like this is a bit of an overreaction.

If anyone can explain to me why this Swine Influenza is SO much worse than any other flu in the world, I would greatly appreciate it.

Twitter

It’s the internet sensation that's sweeping the nation. Can you guess what it is? Well, if you guessed Twitter then you are absolutely correct! But why is it that this new “phenomenon” is taking over? This we may never know.

I am completely baffled as to the significance of Twitter. I understand the fact that it is essentially a site to let everyone know what you are doing every single moment of your day. That much is clear. What bewilders me most, is the fact that people actually care about what you are doing. It is fundamentally what any stalker could ever ask for! I mean, you’re on you way to school. So at a stop light, you HAVE to “tweet”, saying, “I am on my way to school”. Oh thank God you told me that because I was desperate to see what you were doing at 7:30 in the morning! Some say, it is a shorter, simpler way of blogging. Believe me, making statements such as “I am sitting at Starbucks” or “I am hanging out with people” is NOT blogging. You are simply making statements telling people what you are doing. My personal belief is that a blog is more of an online journal to post topics and discussion points.

I, myself, can not get an entire thought across along with an explanation to back up my opinion in under 140 characters. But if you are able to conquer such a feat then go for it! “Tweet” away! I also find it amusing that if you have a Facebook or MySpace already, there is no need for Twitter. These astounding websites not only let you keep in touch with friends, they also have status updates. So they can see what you are doing as well. So why do you need a Twitter, when you can just inform every one of your scintillating activities on your Facebook/MySpace.

The concept of Twitter is perplexing to me. Why do we need it? The answer is, we don’t. Sure, it is a new fad, but fads die out and within a year or two, this one will too. As for me, I will stick to Facebook’s status updates and “tweet” from there.
